What In The World - Apollo Junction

Pre-release album review

artwork

Their best work yet, reflecting their long rocky journey.

It started with Mystery in 2019. In 2021 they went All In. Apollo Junction created a tradition of releasing an album every 2 years and Here We Are, ready for their 4th album. What In The World.

The 5-piece indie pop-rock band from Leeds, have shown clear progress over time. In 2019 they released their first album, Mystery, with the song Begin being my personal pick. In 2021 they released their 2nd album All In, which included Forever. Their 3rd album Here We Are which they released in 2023, was in my opinion another step forward, with songs including Magic, By The River and the title track.

Apollo Junction have been, not only on a very long journey, but also on a very difficult journey. A long rocky road, full of struggles. They found themselves having doubts about their future. They came close to giving up around 4-5 years ago. Thankfully they found the strength and the belief to continue, which proved to be the right decision. The fact that they're 5 good mates who love music, has definitely been a big factor. Their struggles over the years have been reflected in their songs and this is still the case with the songs on their new album, especially Falling. The album in general, has influences from all the ups and downs from their journey over the years. Everytime they seemed to have come to a dead end, everytime they eventually found the breakthrough after that.

Lead singer Jamie Williamson explains the importance of the album: “This album feels exactly right for where we are now. Every track is a snapshot—of getting lost, finding our way back, and remembering why we started. It’s about making something that feels like home. We went looking for meaning and realised it was right in front of us: the band, the songs, this record. ‘What In The World’ isn’t just a title—it’s the answer we’ve been chasing all along.”

After not releasing anything for more than a year, on the 1st of November 2024 Apollo Junction made their comeback with Falling. The first single from this album. A song that reflects struggles and quite an analogy of the band's long and rocky road to success.

Then, we had to wait another 5 months which is relatively long, but once again, it was worth it. They managed to get Briana Corrigan, formerly of The Beautiful South, to sing with Jamie in the song. The result was brilliant.

Entangled was released in June and the countdown for the album release has well and trully on.

Two days before the album release, on Wednesday 20th, Apollo Junction published the music video of the song Satellites.

The early impression

Apollo Junction have kept the tradition of releasing an album every 2 years and I think What In The World which is coming out this Friday, is their best album yet. My personal favourite song is Entangled, which could have been the title track. But they chose to name the album What In The World, which is a phrase in the song We Don't Dream Their Dreams. They went with that title, because that's exactly the message they wanted to send. Out of 11 tracks, I can pick at least 5 that stand out for me, with Entangled being the best, Settle Down and Falling being really strong tracks and What In The World and Satellites also deserving a mention. Of course I've already heard the first 3 for much longer than the rest. It's an early impression and it could always evolve. What I am certain about is that their 4th album is clearly their best work yet, in terms of both songwriting and production. Now we have really high expectations for the album they will release in 2027.
